No. 7 of a seven-towel series: one golf question per towel. Why does a headwind hurt more than a tailwind helps? Into the wind, the ball meets the air faster, so drag and lift both grow: it climbs, stalls and drops short. Downwind it meets the air slower and comes down sooner. In strong wind, a headwind can hurt more than twice as much as a tailwind helps. The towel shows three flights: into the wind, no wind and downwind.

The science

  • Into the wind, the ball meets the air faster. Drag and lift both grow with the square of airspeed, so it climbs, stalls and drops short.
  • Downwind, it meets the air slower, loses lift and comes down sooner.
  • At higher wind speeds, a headwind hurts more than twice as much as a tailwind helps.
